God Sightings – January 2024

Without a doubt, Jehu was the best of the Kings of Israel (II Kings 9:30-10:36). The lineage of Judean Kings certainly outnumbers Israeli Kings for their virtue and fear of Yahweh, at least six to one.  Yet, Jehu, in all his passion for the fear of the Lord, “did not turn aside from the sins of Jeraboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and Dan” (II Kings 10:29,30).  Whatever the reason, Jehu failed to exterminate those images erected by Jeroboam that blurred the distinction between Mosaic and Canaanite religion and worship. However, the Bible says, “Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel” (II Kings 10:28).  Of Jehu, God declared, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel” (I Kings 10:30).  Yet, though Jehu knew the favor of God for his obedience, Scripture tells us, “But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart” (I Kings 10:31).

At the outset of this New Year, I am renewed in my focus of God’s “pleading mercy.”  Jehu is commended by Yahweh, knowing full well his compromises and wondering heart. Though the Lord chastens Jehu, ie., “In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel” (II Kings 10:32), yet  the Lord pleads in mercy for multiplied blessing through obedience. When I read the account of Jehu again, my initial reaction was this, “What’s wrong with these Kings?  But when I look at my heart and the pleading mercy of Jehovah, I say,

Change my heart, oh God, make it ever new. Change my heart,

oh God, make me more like You.”   -Eddie Espinosa

Continue, Father, to plead with me through your mercies in this New Year.
